  COMPLETION OF WATER WELL SCHEME:

Friend’s Pakistan is strongly committed to work for the development of the vulnerable communities.  In this regard, development of Physical Infrastructure in the vulnerable rural areas is an important program of Friends Pakistan.

At the village of Makria Sharif Shinkiari District Mansehra, villagers did not have access to nearby clean potable water.  They had to work hard for their water, often fetching it from far-off sources i.e. river Siren and using it extremely carefully and sparsely. The time and efforts spent on collecting water was a double burden on them, as less time was then available to them for livelihood activities.

They were using river water for drinking, bathing, laundering clothes and defecation.  Little water was used for cleaning, toilets and sanitation as it was fetched from distance. The quality of water of river was not good, as it passes through dense populations preceding to the village of Makria Sharif, on account of which the water was getting contaminated. As a result, population of the village was suffering from different diseases on account of less availability of water for cleaning purpose and using of contaminated drinking water of the river.

For addressing this issue of unavailability of clean water, Friends Pakistan initiated a Water Well Scheme at village Makria Sharif Shinkiari Mansehra with the funding of Japan Water Forum Fund in the month of November 2008. The Scheme of water well has been completed successfully on February 19, 2009.

The objectives of the activities undertaken by Friends Pakistan include the provision of clean, easily accessible potable water to the community of village Makria by digging a water well for drinking as well as cleanining and sanitation purposes to prevent the incidences of water born diseases and awareness raising of the community about the effective use of water for drinking and overall cleanliness for the promotion of health and hygiene in the area.

For the implementation of the project activities, Friends Pakistan adopted the participatory approach i.e. made sure the involvement of all stakeholders. The community members of village Makria Sharif were given the ownership for the completion of the project. A water management committee (CWC) was constituted from within the community members of Makria Sharif, whom the responsibility of undertaking all the project activities was allocated according to the project specification. Volunteers were identified from within the community, who took part in the physical tasks of the project. These volunteers played their role to raise the awareness of the Community of Makria Sharif and its surrounding villages about the effective utilization of water for cleanliness and promotion of health and hygienic practices through the conduct of three (3) awareness raising sessions at different sites of Makria Sharif.
