In the province of Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa in general and especially in the rural areas of the province, women have limited access to their rights. The cultural environment in such rural areas poses challenges for women and their ability to achieve economic independence. Women live under the most conservative culture observe strict “prahdah” (covering their hair and face with cloth), are less involved in decision making processes, have limited mobility and are often times isolated from socio-economic opportunities outside their family homes. Overall, the ability of women and young girls to access productive resources, increase their income, improve their health and improve their social status is limited compared to men.
In such a situation, Friends welfare Association Pakistan has initiated the projects of vocational training centers and functional literacy for the women of the rural areas to equip the women with the functional skills and to earn respectable living for themselves.
Friends Pakistan with the support of The Onaway Trust and Knk Japan is implementing the projects of vocational Training centers and Life skills in the areas of Kotli Pain, Shinkiari, Sathangali and Balakot to support the vulnerable girls by providing them access to girl’s education & life skills in District Mansehra, KhyberPakhtoon Province, Pakistan.
In these projects, a standard curriculum was utilized for the classes of Functional literacy, innumeracy and vocational training activities carried out at all the projects’ centers. At the projects’ centers, along with developing the proficiency of the beneficiaries in reading, writing and innumeracy, the skills of two hundred and sixty (260) underprivileged girls have been also enhanced in the skills of Patterning, Cutting, Sewing, Embroidery, preparation of decoration items and beautician. The awareness of the beneficiary’s girls of the project was built about their rights (Inherittance, Conjugal), family law and health related topics. back
