Umar Shahzad S/O Noor Alam is the resident of upper Mangli Union Council Balakot. He is of the age twenty years. He was studying at class 7th at the Government High School Balakot at the time when the natural calamity in the form of Earthquake came on October 8th, 2005. Umar was also in the school when the natural calamity started to happen. All of the sudden the school building collapsed. Umar was also a victim amongst many others who badly got hurt in this panic. Unfortunately, Umar had Severe Spinal Cord Injury in this event on account of which his lower part completely got paralyzed. His family tried every effort to get him remedied but the nature of the injury was such that there was no chance of his walking on feet again like the other persons. Water is one of the most precious commodities and is an important necessity for the humans, animals and plants. All the people have the right to have access to the clean drinking water. Friends Pakistan completed a Drinking water Supply Scheme through digging water well at village Makria Sharif, Union Council Shinkiari, District Mansehra.The total number of the house holds living in the village of Makria Sharif is fifty. Total Direct Beneficiaries of the project are three hundred and fifty (350) people of the village in which one hundred and Sixty eight (168) are male and one hundred and eighty two (182) are female. The work on this Water Well Scheme was completed on February 19, 2009. The main occupations of the villagers are agriculture, livestock and labor work. Read more

Ms Shamim is a vocational trainer at the “Functional Literacy and Life Skill center” Kotli pain under Friends Pakistan/ The Onaway Trust project. She is thirty seven years old. She is married and has three children. Her elder daughter Samera is eighteen years old. She has two sons, Jazeb who is sixteen years old and Saad who is fourteen years old. She lives at Mohalla Bagh Shinkiari a nearby village of the town Shinkiari. Her household size is comprised of five members including her husband and her three children.Ms Shamim is extremely vulnerable woman as she has faced worse financial crises in her life. Her husband is very older than her as he is nearly elderly. She was compelled to get married by her parents against her will with a person who was very older than her. Safeena is a resident of Sathangali UC Hilkot Mansehra. Her father name is Abdul Qayum. She is seventeen years old. She has three brothers and two sisters. She studies in class 7th at Government Girls Middle School (GGMS) Sathangali which is supported by Friends Pakistan. Their family is comprised of eight family members. Safeena belongs to a very poor family. Her father is a teacher. The daily expenses of their family are greater than their income. The income of her father is meager so he is not able to make proper arrangements for fulfilling all the necessities of his huge family as he only earns in the family. Safeena has always had a lot of fondness for higher education. Right from her childhood, she wished to become a doctor. She was quite resolute to continue her education until she achieves her goals. Ghalib is a thirteen years boy, who resides at Baghwar Shinkiari. He studies in class fifth at the educational institution, NHA Shinkiari which is supported by Friends Pakistan/KnK Japan. Ghalib lives with his mother in a rented house. The total size of their family is eleven. He has seven brothers and two sisters. His father has died recently in the month of November 2008. Before attending the educational center, NHA Shinkiari, he was studying in the government primary school Shinkiari during the year of 2005. His father was a poor man, who used to do the work carriage of commodities for the villagers on his donkeys. The family of Ghalib was badly entrapped in the cruel clutches of misfortune, when unfortunately his father got addicted to the pernicious drugs. Two elder brothers of Ghalib were also less than sixteen years so were not in the position to support the family. Read more
